Boom Barrier Maintenance Checklist for Harsh Climates

Barrier gates rarely fail without warning. They fail after a spring has gone soft, a loop detector has drifted, a gearbox has been greased with the wrong product, or a cabinet base has subsided - conditions that a short monthly inspection would have caught. This is the schedule we recommend for sites in extreme climates, whether the stress is heat and dust, cold and snow, or salt air.

Monthly

  • Cycle the arm ten times and listen. A slowing arm, a late stop or grinding are early warnings.
  • Check spring balance with the motor off: with the arm near forty-five degrees it should hold, not fall.
  • Clean the arm, photoelectric sensors and any camera lens or window. Dust and salt film reduce sensing range significantly.
  • Verify loop detector behaviour by driving a vehicle over the loop and confirming the arm does not descend.
  • Check the cabinet door seal and cable glands - that is where water and dust actually get in.

Quarterly

  • Lubricate the gearbox and pivot points with the manufacturer's specified grade for your temperature range.
  • Test anti-smash and obstacle detection with a test object and record the result.
  • Inspect foundation bolts and lane surface for subsidence that puts the arm out of level.
  • Review the controller event log for repeated manual overrides.

Annually

  • Replace balance springs on lanes above their rated cycle count rather than waiting for failure.
  • Renew relay boards and service the drive electronics per the manufacturer's schedule.
  • Re-commission any ANPR camera: height, angle, focus, format settings, and a day and night test with real plates.
  • Audit backup power. A barrier that cannot open during an outage can trap vehicles inside.

The lane log

Keep one line per lane per event: date, symptom, action, parts. It converts warranty discussions into a short conversation and shows when a lane has become uneconomic to keep repairing.

BAROXON supports its boom barrier range with regional spare parts stocking and an installer certification programme.
