ANPR - automatic number plate recognition, also called LPR - turns a number plate into the ticket. Done well, it removes the entry ticket, the lost-ticket argument at the pay station and a good part of the queue. Done badly, it produces a car park full of exception records that staff have to resolve by hand. The difference is mostly in how the system is designed.
Where the camera goes decides everything
Two things matter more than camera resolution: the angle between the plate and the lens, and the lighting. A plate should be read within roughly thirty degrees of straight-on, at a distance that keeps the characters large enough to resolve. In the Gulf this is complicated by strong low sun, which can blow out a plate at exactly the time of day the east-facing morning entry peaks.
Plate formats and country settings
Saudi plates combine Arabic and Latin characters with a defined set of numeric and letter shapes, and GCC visitors add their own formats. The recognition engine needs country and format configuration, not just a generic model, otherwise the misread rate climbs on the exact plates most likely to be rejected at the lane.
Entry and exit logic
- Entry: the system reads the plate, checks it against season-ticket, staff and reservation lists, opens the barrier and starts the session. No printed ticket is required.
- Exit: the plate is re-read, matched to the open session, the fee is calculated, payment is taken at a kiosk or in the app, and the barrier releases.
- Exceptions: an unreadable or dirty plate should fall back to a barcode, a QR code, or an attendant screen quickly - not stall the exit lane.
Preventing plate swapping and tailgating
Two vehicles sharing one plate is a real loss source in paid car parks. A loop detector that confirms a single vehicle per opening, plus a lift-and-drop arm, plus an alert when the same plate exits without a matching entry, closes most of that gap.
Integration, not replacement
Most sites already have barriers, a payment provider and a reporting requirement. Buy an ANPR layer that exposes a documented interface to those systems, and keep the loop detectors as the safety trigger.
