Access control on a car park is one of those systems that is invisible until something goes wrong - and when it goes wrong the questions come from a fire officer, an insurer or a lawyer rather than a driver. These are the points worth verifying on any barrier and ANPR installation in Saudi Arabia, whether it is a new project or a retrofit.
Emergency egress comes first
Vehicle barriers are security equipment, and security equipment must not become an obstacle in an emergency. Two things need to be true. The barrier must fail open, not closed, on loss of mains power or on a fire alarm signal. And there must be a documented, tested manual release that a member of staff can operate quickly without tools. Confirm both with your fire consultant before the lane is commissioned, not after.
Accessible parking
Accessible bays must remain reachable and, just as importantly, must not be blocked by a vehicle waiting at a failed barrier. This argues for keeping accessible bays and the accessible route on the exit side of any barrier, and for a means of releasing the lane from the control room.
Safety devices on the lane
- Under-vehicle loop protection, so the barrier cannot close onto a car that is still passing.
- Obstacle detection, so the arm reverses instead of continuing into an obstruction.
- Clear signage and markings at the stop line, in Arabic and English.
- Photoelectric sensors on the pedestrian route where a barrier arm sweeps across a walkway.
Record keeping
An ANPR system produces a record of vehicle movements, and that record is personal data. Decide up front how long plate images and session logs are kept, who can access them, and how a request from a vehicle owner is answered. Most disputes are resolved by having a clear retention policy rather than by having more data.
Consistency across sites
Facility managers running several locations get the most benefit from standardising: the same barrier interface, the same ANPR country settings, the same release procedure and the same maintenance schedule at every site. It shortens staff training and makes an incident review comparable across buildings.
